Tony Austin Battles with John Leonard Over ASCA's Legitimacy

A few days ago, we linked to a blog post from Tony Austin's SCAQ blog. In it Tony referenced another blog that had been investigating ASCA (American Swim Coaches Association) as a result of a proposed San Antonio aquatics complex that would use local tax revenue. The accusation in the blog was startling- that ASCA was not in fact incorporated in the United States.

Since then, things have gotten considerably more heated.

Today Tony received what he termed a "threatening" e-mail from John Leonard, the Executive Director of ASCA. While the blogger that made the original accusations has come on to say she is too intimidated to continue, Tony is sticking to his guns. I have many of the same objections that Tony has to ASCA. It seems to me to primarily be a money-making scheme that reaps the rewards of coaches' need for its certifications. Earlier this year I had to take my USA Swimming Foundations of Coaching exam, which requires you to follow along with a $20 DVD produced by ASCA. I didn't buy the DVD and I consider the exam a farce. I honestly feel like I don't know enough to make a proper judgment on whether the more serious claims against ASCA are true.

To read up on all the back and forth, go see Tony's post from today.

  1. Love the that photo of John Leonard. Note how he seems to be showing off his jewelry. i.e. his watch (Just my opinion which in no way reflects that of the swim brief blog.)

  2. Is this the same John Leonard that made unfounded doping charge against the 16 year old Chinese swimmer that has since passe the IOC drug test?

He's making us all look like bad sport, and we're supposed to entrust our children the the likes of this character?
